Church History:
The spirit of revival that was producing
converts weekly at Uniontown came to the attention of Mr. & Mrs. Crago
and Mr. & Mrs. Clark Breakiron who were living near Grindstone.
They began attending the Uniontown church and in the fall of 1919 and
spring of 1920, respectively, both couples moved to Hopwood in order
to be closer to the church. C. L. Page, pastor at Uniontown,
began holding prayer services in their homes in 1921 and soon there
was talk of opening a Sunday School.
A one-room building, known as the old M.
P. Church, being used temporarily as a school for grades one through
four, was rented by George Cargo, Sunday School superintendent.
The men built seats and got the building ready. The first Sunday
there were fifty-two present. On January 2, 1922, C. L. Page
organized the church.
A revival was planned for that spring and
God moved in the community. A large number were converted.
Another welcome addition to the church family came in the fall of 1922
when Edward and Laura Savage moved to Hopwood to join the church.
Mr. Savage represented the church as delegate many times, served on a
number of conference committees, was a member of the Stationing
Committee for many years and was delegate to General Conference
several times.
The church continued to grow and on
September 15, 1926, a larger facility was dedicated. It was
constructed with material taken from the old Tree of Life Temple in
Uniontown. Around 1947 the parsonage was built and the church
remodeled. On October 20, 1974, after much labor by members of
the congregation, a new sanctuary and educational facilities were
dedicated on the site of the former church. Adjoining property
has been secured and a nice parking lot constructed.

Church History:
In the early 1930s, Harry Bell, driving
through the little mining community on his way to work, was impressed
to open a Sunday school as he saw the large number of children at
play. Upon contacting William Beal, the mine superintendent,
permission was given to use a three-room house. After remodeling
the house and acquiring seats from an old theatre, the first service
was held on November 9, 1930. Following a seven-week revival in
1934, district elder W. W. Spiker received a large number on
probation. In 1936 a fully organized church was effected during
the pastorate of W. F. Grafton.
When their place of worship was no longer
available, some members attended Hopwood, which was a part of the
circuit, while others held classes outside, later in a barn, and still
later in a store room owned by Joseph Pantalo. In 1939 the
present location was secured and a church erected with lumber from an
eight-room house. The church was built under the supervision of
Pastor W. A. Rambo and Sunday school superintendent George Crago.
The building has been remodeled several times over the years. In
1975 a parsonage was secured nearby.
Paul Show, Ray Rhodes and Charles O'Brien
have entered the ministry from this congregation.

Abiding
Ministries History
As with all movements of God, Abiding
Ministries started as a seed planted in the heart of His people.
The very beginning was work that was unseen by man's eyes because it
was God shaping and guiding people's hearts and minds long before it
ever got off of the ground.
This heart shaping all came together at
a meeting in the fall of 2000 where the leaders of the Free
Methodist Church of New Cumberland had a "special meeting" with the
Pastor to set a new course of outreach for the church.
The meeting was attended by two leaders
from the Pittsburgh Conference of the Free Methodist Church.
At the meeting the dream was introduced, and it was there that the
preparing that God had been doing in advance came together.
Oh, the meeting did not go perfect, there were issues to work
through and some were tough, but a desire to see God work in the
City of New Cumberland in a way that He never has through a ministry
not yet seen was an issue all agreed upon. From there God gave
shape to what was to become Abiding Ministries.
The teens worked at painting life size
pictures on all the walls in the basement of the church. In
the center of the hall the Abiding Ministries emblem is painted
along with the Scripture reference John 15:5. That is the
verse where the name came from.
If we abide in Christ and He in us, then
we are different. Different because we are living a life that
is like Jesus. That type of life then produces results that
help others want a relationship with Him. That is what we are
all about, understanding that the first part of that is to develop
friendships.
The first part that came together for
Abiding Ministries was the items for the drop in center. We
have a pool table, ping pong, air hockey, and other activities for
those who visit to enjoy. A grant from the Pittsburgh
Conference of the Free Methodist Church along with a private
donation allowed us to buy these, purchase a sign and run an add
about our grand opening.
The connection that Abiding Ministries
with the Free Methodist Church of New Cumberland is two sided.
The church allows Abiding Ministries to use the building(s) free of
charge, and the active members of the Official Board of the church
are the decision makers.
Financially, Abiding Ministries is self
supporting. So far all funds have come through private
donations and the selling of candy.
Abiding Ministries also receives help
from the town of New Cumberland, WV. Along with the support of
the town and Mayor Jack Watson, support comes from other churches
and local organizations.
Grand opening was January 5, 2002.
The programs started that next week. Children came to the drop
in center on Monday's and Wednesday's 3:00pm to 5:00pm. The
teens use the drop in center on Saturday night 7:00pm to 10:00pm.
The adults use the drop in center on Tuesday nights 7:00pm to
10:00pm.
The summer of 2002 the First Free
Methodist Church of East Liverpool, Ohio gave Abiding Ministries a
fifteen passenger van. It was painted and worked on all
through private donations through community businesses. It was
put on the road in December 2002. The van is used to bring any
to the drop in center that need a ride along with transportation to
special events.
January 2003 for the first anniversary
of being open we had an open house with special guests. They
were three football players from the West Virginia football team.
The summer of 2003, August Abiding
Ministries along with Weirton Medical Center conducted a Bike Rally,
giving out free helmets, t-shirts and door prizes of four bikes and
smaller gifts.
Abiding Ministries has come a long way
from the dreams that first entered our minds. There is more to
come. Our receiving our 501c3 extended plans including
after-school program that includes a paid tutor, hiring of students
for summer work, and other support groups that will make it easier
for the people of the are to abide in Christ.
In September 2005 a new building will be
completed where Abiding Ministries will operate out of. The
building is 80ft x 40ft. It will host all the activities
listed above. The building is called "The Arbor". The
name "arbor" is used on purpose. Because an grape arbor is
used to keep the vines up off of the ground allowing them to be as
fruitful as possible. The grape arbor is the support system
fort the grapes. As such, "the Arbor" hosts activities where
support can be found for all ages to deal with life issues, together
making a difference in the lives of the community people.
As of April 2005 we moved from the 15
passenger van to a 20 passenger transit bus that was sold to us at
the unbelievable price of $1,500.
We are always pursuing grants to expand
the outreach of Abiding Ministries. God is so good, and we are
honored to have the privilege of working for Him.
